As I Know It ... Wisconsin's Northwoods

Hey all: I'm taking a side trip with this blog post. We just got back from a long weekend in the Wisconsin north woods. I've been going up there ever since I can remember. I bet some of you out there have been doing the same sort of thing ... going to a favorite place every year for your vacation, whether it's north, south, east or west. Some place your parents always took you as a child and now you still continue to go there. That's me. My parents were never the adventurous kind. My mom's parents always went "up north" and my parents did the same. So, that being said I want to share some photos I took of my Wisconsin north woods, as I know it.
This is the road leading to our cabin. It's on the Manitowish River which leads into Boulder Lake near Boulder Junction, WI.
I love this area along side the road. Each time we go I try to capture the perfect image of it. All the ferns kind of look like a sea of green around here.
.
I love to sit on the deck and enjoy the noises of the woods. It's not cars, trucks, horns, airplanes, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, usually not dogs barking. But it is hummingbirds whirring by, chipmunks scurrying in the brush, an occasional loon, the wind blowing and if we're lucky a deer or two at the feeder.

This is the cabin - looking at it from the lake side. It's about to get a face lift and be cedar sided. My mom wanted it this blue color, but that's not really right for the north woods.

My husband, fishing off the dock ... some times the best place to catch fish. You can see the opposite shore isn't too far away. This is the Manitowish River, one of the best places to find a variety of wildlife in northern Wisconsin. We've seen deer, bears, otters, beavers, bald eagles, skunks, raccoons, ducks (I'm sure I'm forgetting some more).

This dude couldn't fill his cheeks enough with the corn in the deer feeder. He had a whole bunch of buddies doing the same all day.

I tried for two days to capture the elusive hummingbirds in mid air. It's not too easy. I sat and I sat ... waiting. My camera got heavy. Seemed as soon as I'd put my arms down the stinkers would come to the feeders.
